The IC695CHS016 is a sixteen (16) slot universal backplane that is part of the PACsystem RX3i Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) family. This Emerson Automation backplane is designed to host the universal controller and I/O base modules, and integrates support for Peripheral component Interconnect (PCI) and high-speed serial bus to support RX3i modules as well as the traditional 90-30 series PLC family. The IC695CHS016 is 23.7 (W) x 5.57 (H) x 5.80 (D) or 601.98 (W) x 141.5 (H) x 147.32 (D)) and consumes 600 mA@3.3 VDC and 240 mA@5 VDC, Supplied by RX3i power supply. The backboard also supports hot-swappable modules, which helps improve system availability and ease of maintenance. The IC695CHS016 backplane may also be referred to by some as a chassis, rack, or baseboard. Regardless of the terminology used, the IC695CHS016 provides module connectivity to the backplane, power distribution, and host internal communication for each module. In addition, the backboard has the interfaces required for local expansion dock interconnections, allowing additional modules to be installed and connected to the same bus hosted by the IC695CHS016. The IC695CHS016 supports horizontal installation only. It comes with a terminal board for isolated 24 VDC input and isolated ground wiring. It is recommended to fasten it to a subpanel of a NEMA/UL Type 1 housing or a housing of at least IP20 rating (IEC60529). Minimum installation gaps must be followed to allow natural air cooling. The minimum mounting clearance required for all sides of the backplane is 102 mm or 4 inches.

It should be mentioned that some components require multiple slots, such as an AC power unit that requires 2 empty slots. This means that each individual slot can be configured for a specific module, and backplanes like the IC695CHS016 backplane are ideal platforms for high-performance systems involving many components. The backplane is made of durable material and its housing includes the following dimensions: 141.4 x 602 x 147.3 mm (5.5 x 23.7 x 5.8 inches).
